What a piss poor day.  Only a couple bites, and all I caught was leaves & snails!

    No Score to report =(

    Better luck next time!

    Striper #1 for the Day!

    Striper #1 for the Day!

Another evening spent rock hopping and casting in  the Saluda River.  It was absolutely gorgeous today, the temperature is already cooler giving the air the slight hint that fall is right around the corner, one of my favorite times of year.  With fall brings the lift of the Saluda Striper Bass regulation; starting Oct. 1st you can keep them if they are over 26 inches long.  We prefer to catch and release - but won’t pass up the chance every so often to bring home fresh dinner.

Tonight proved to be another successful evening on the river.  We arrived around 5pm, a bit early and the bites were minimal at best, just around sunset the action picked up and we ended up catching a total of 3 that evening, the largest having been caught by Andrew, 23 inches long!  There are a couple new photos up in the Pictures Page.

    • Final Score: Sue 2, Andrew 1
    • Striper Bass: Sue 2, Andrew 1
    • Largest “Catch of the Day”: Andrew
    • Bait: Rapala Lures

Sue Catches her 3rd Striper Bass of the Day!

Sue Catches her 3rd Striper Bass of the Day!

Decided to get out on the Saluda River today, being new to river fishing (and fishing in SC) we were not sure what to expect since this past Thursday the Lake Murray Dam was let open and the river rose roughly 4 feet or so, but it was back down today to what we refer to as “normal” since thats what we are used to.

We trekked out to our usual spot on some rocks near the Zoo access, but much to our dismay it was pretty crowded down there and our spot was taken, being the 3 day weekend we expected it but were still hopeful.  We chose another area we usually hit towards the end of the day and I managed to reel in a very small Sunfish which I had somehow hooked in the butt, he peed and almost got me in the face! Thankfully the population was thinning greatly and we were able to rock hop right into our favorite area.

I threw a few casts and not long after I reeled in one of the smallest Sunfish I have ever hooked, but at least something was biting!  Sue 2, Andrew 0.  A few casts later my count jumped to 3, and then 4 - I caught 2 small stripers within 15 minutes or so.  Of course my eternal hope was fully restored, but Andrew seemed a bit down.  Not 10 minutes or so later he reeled in an even bigger striper and the score went to Sue 4, Andrew 1, at least he wasn’t still sitting at the big fat 0! muahahah!

The fishing really started to pick up as the last bit of sunlight was diminishing.  The fish activity was amazing down there this evening, it seemed as if we were surrounded by splashing hungry fishies!  Not only were the striper hungry, but I also reeled in a smaller sized large mouth bass from the slower moving water near the rocks, about 5 feet from where I was standing.  The day wouldn’t be complete without “the one that got away” which we both ended up hooking into what we thought were much larger striper, too smart for us, they managed to thrash around enough to come right off the hook.

The evening was over way too soon, and after we each caught one more striper we hopped the rocks back to the car, it was getting pretty dark out there.  One of the best fishing evenings we’ve had so far on the Saluda.

For more pictures be sure to check out our Photo Page for more great shots!

    • Final Score: Sue 6, Andrew 2
    • Striper Bass: Sue 3, Andrew 2
    • Large Mouth Bass: Sue 1
    • Sunfish (Bream): Sue 2
    • Largest “Catch of the Day”: Andrew (Striper)
    • Bait: Rapala Lures

P.S. No fish were kept today - all are safely back in the water and unharmed =)

I’ve decided since I’ve started spending a lot of time at the Saluda River that it would kinda neat to begin a blog of interesting things I’ve seen & done out there.  Still under construction.
